Short order: Truck art at MG Road

Mackensy Lunsford + staff reports

Want a tutorial in Indian street food and culture? On April 27, Asheville’s MG Road will host a screening of the short documentary film, “Horn Please.”

The movie is based on the age-old folk tradition of Indian truck art, focusing on its evolution and the people who interact with it.

“It would’ve been impossible to tell the story of Chai Pani and MG Road without telling the story of the streets of India,” said restaurant owner Meherwan Irani. “And one of the iconic images of the streets of India is the Tata truck, colorfully painted and bedecked with ornaments and charms.”

According to a news release for the documentary: “The designs painted on the trucks do not merely stand for aesthetic purposes, but they also attempt to depict religious, sentimental, and emotional viewpoints of everyone related to the truck industry.”

Irani said most art inside Chai Pani and MG Road is inspired by trucks. And his restaurants serve another purpose, in addition to serving food.

“I’ve always felt that Chai Pani has an obligation to promote not just the street food of India, but its culture, its art and its diversity, and to always provide context, which I believe leads to a deeper understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the cuisine,” he said.

MG Road will serve Indian truck food and a glass of Grand Trunk Road punch at the April 27 screening, which starts at 7 p.m. More info: www.projecthornplease
