2014 ELECTION GUIDE: Buncombe County primary races

Voters go to the polls today to choose winners among 17 people running in primary elections in Buncombe County from Congress to county commissioner.

Polling sites will be open 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The primary is the only election in four of the races.

The Republican faceoff in county commissioner District 3 between challenger Miranda DeBruhl and incumbent David King is shaping up to be the hottest race in the county, followed by the Democratic battle for the district attorney's office.

Turnout will likely be low. Only 12 percent of registered voters in the county cast a ballot in the last midterm primary election.

Candidates at the top of the list in each race historically do better in low turnout elections, said Chris Cooper, a political scientist at Western Carolina University. Incumbents and women also fare better. Early voting started April 24 and ended May 3.

Where to vote: A full list of locations is available from the county Board of Elections office. Call 250-4200.
