ASHEVILLE - An Asheville man is facing 55 counts of animal cruelty after authorities searched his home last week.

Police say they are charging Ronald Lewis Robinson of 340 Midland Drive, Asheville.

A local animal hospital contacted the Asheville Police Department's Animal Services Division last Thursday “to report two cases of possible animal abuse and neglect,” according to Asheville police spokeswoman Christina Hallingse.

“After further investigation they went out to the house. They realized the magnitude and then they went and got a search warrant and that’s when they went in and seized the animals,” Hallingse said.

Officials seized 55 dogs. One of them died during treatment, Hallingse said. The dogs are mostly smaller breeds.

The Asheville Humane Society, REACH Animal Hospital and other local vets are now caring for the animals.

“Each dog is receiving different treatment. They are in various conditions,” Hallingse said.

Hallingse said the investigation is continuing.

It’s not clear when the dogs might be available for adoption. An employee at the Humane Society declined comment.

Police ask anyone with information on the case to contact the Asheville Police Department at 828-252-1110 or Buncombe County Crime Stoppers at 828-255-5050.
