The “She’s the First Girls’ Education Summit” on the State of Girls’ Education will take place Nov. 4 and 5 at UNC Asheville. The two-day event focuses on critically assessing and engaging the female experience through the lens of girls’ education.

The purpose is to examine the barriers that prevent girls from receiving a quality education locally and globally, understand the benefits of educating girls and women, and discover what individuals can do to promote and support equality through education. The summit will feature a combination of movie screenings, panels, discussions and interactive workshops.

It begins at 7:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4 at the UNCA Grotto, with opening remarks, then a “Ghostbusters” screening and discussion.

The summit continues at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 5 with keynote speaker Becca Wertheim, the founder of the UNCA chapter of She’s the First. Wertheim graduated from UNCA in 2013, and is now a teacher at Claxton Elementary School in Asheville.

Other speakers will include Ali McGhee, editorial director of the Asheville Grit; Melissa Reardon, Editor in Chief of WNC Magazine; John and Joyce Wanda, co-founders of the Arlington Academy of Hope, a primary school in rural Eastern Uganda that emphasizes small class sizes and high learning standards, in order to allow children to receive a high quality education; Amy Renigar, executive director for Girls on the Run; and Shannon Cornelius, who works at Pisgah Legal Services as the Affordable Care Act Program Director.

There will panel discussions, interactive workshops, and a DIY cupcake bar. The event is open to the public. For more information, visit http://stfuncasummit.weebly.com/.
